Your spine provides your body with structural support and protects your spinal cord. The spine consists of 24 bones known as 'vertebrae' which are stacked on top of each other.
The spine is capable of complex movements. Between each vertebra is a disc that serves as a spongy cushion that absorbs the shock created when you walk, run, and move. Ligaments hold the vertebrae and discs together and tendons attach muscles to the spine. When you contract your muscles to move your spine, the ligaments are elastic and the spinal column bends and twists.
The spine encloses and protects your spinal cord, the main nerve cord that transmits nerve impulses between your brain and the rest of your body.
Spinal joints that aren’t moving right can affect nearby nerves. Chiropractic adjustments add motion to these restricted joints, reducing nervous system disruption. Then, health can improve.
Like lifting a heavy rock off your toe, our patients often report a pleasant sense of release directly following their adjustments. Sometimes a specific, highly-accurate thrust is used. Or an instrument delivers carefully directed energy. Or a slow, constant pressure is used. Several areas may be adjusted, or just one. Sometimes a popping sound is heard. Because chiropractors rely on adjustments to help your body “right itself," chiropractors are experts in evaluating and delivering the proper adjustments.
Most patients report a sense of well-being and ease. After all, if adjustments weren't pleasant, patients wouldn’t return for the multiple visits needed to retrain and strengthen their spine!
Newborns, infants, children, seniors and even back surgery patients can get adjusted. Naturally, adjustments are tailored to your size, age and particular health issue.
